Spark:York

York has a new destination!

Last month, Sam Leach and Tom Mckenzie opened up Spark:York, an amazing ‘village’ created from 23 upcycled shipping containers, arranged over two levels, each ‘unit’ housing a local, energetic, exciting independent trader.

Spark:York is a local project, for local people.  The founders aim to share their experiences of travel, food, socialising and working to create the ultimate, inclusive space in the heart of York, and further to our first visit we confirm they’ve done just that!  A new local landmark and catalyst for change – both in its appearance and its operational environment, York has seen nothing like it! We felt more like we were exploring a venue in a trendy London suburb.

Included at Spark:York…

  • Street food kiosks – unique street food not found elsewhere in the City
  • Beverage kiosks – serving alcohol and non-alcohol based drinks, tapping into the early evening, European-style way of drinking and socialising
  • Retail – selling unique products from small, independent retailers
  • Shared workspace – a Hub for socially-minded local start-ups, charities and entrepreneurs, providing hands-on support to help ideas flourish
  • Meeting / teaching space – a quiet, private space for meetings or classroom-type events
  • Stage and performance area – providing a platform for performing arts and a regular programme of events and activities for York residents
  • Public workspace – free wi-fi and desk space accessible to Digital Nomads or people needing a couple of hours space in the City Centre.

There are a plethora of choices food and drink, we enjoyed fresh Thai food from the amazing Tikks Thai Kitchen, washed down with chilled glass in the setting evening sun – bliss!  We can’t wait to get back to try another of the vendors and maybe a cocktail or two!

Open every day until from 8am until 10.30pm
