Once the preserve of athletes and dot com entrepreneurs, trainers have become decidedly mainstream.  Can we all please just whisper a ‘thank you’ to ye fashion gods on high for transforming our weekend outfits into ones we can actually wear?! No more struggling with a mid-heeled court or a pair flat riding boots which, now the weather is peaking into double figures, will give us calf sweat.

There are some guidelines here in the comfort of trainer land so before you head to the checkout read our top tips:

  1. You can’t just wear your workout trainers. Not unless you are going for the whole head-to-toe gym attire ‘look’. You need some more fashion-y type trainers to wear with your jeans, and, if you are brave, your midi skirt.

  2. Since these will quickly become your ‘go-to’ shoe they still need to fit so try them on in the shop with the socks you’ll be wearing them with.

  3. This is either the time for fun and frolics or the time for the fashion frown of “I take this stuff very seriously” ie. If you take this stuff seriously you want a pair of Adidas Stan Smith Originals. If not then the Boden Hotchpotch trainers might be for you. Feeling your fashion barometer is somewhere in the middle?
